Linear Equation Solver

Linear Equation Solver In order to solve a Linear Equation in one variable of the type ax + b = 0 where a is not equal to 0 we distribute the terms within parenthesis and simplify both sides by collecting the like terms. Then we isolate all variables on one side and all the constants on the other side. We simplify and make the coefficient of the unknown variable 1. Example 1: Solve: 5 3 (5x + 2) = 4 (7- 3x) + 1 Solution: 5 3 (5x + 2) = 4 (7- 3x) + 1 5 15x 6 = 28 12x +1 [Distributing the terms within parenthesis] -15x -1 = -12x + 29 [On Simplifying the like terms we get] - 15x + 12x = 29 + 1 [Isolating the variable on one side and the constant on other side] (- 3)x = 30 [Divide both sides by -3 and we will get] x = -10 Example 2: The sum of two numbers is 90 and the greater number exceeds thrice the smaller by 14.Find the numbers. Solution: Let the smaller number be x. As the sum of the two numbers is 90, then the greater number will be 90 x. Thrice the smaller number will be 3x So the equation becomes: 90 x = 3x + 14 -x -3x = 14 90 [Isolating the variable on one side and the constant on other side] (-4)x = - 76 [Divide both sides by -4 and we will get] x = 19 Then the greater number will be 90 x = 90 19 = 71 Hence the two numbers are 19 and 71.

How To Improve Your SSAT Math Score

How To Improve Your SSAT Math Score At first glance, the SSAT Math Section (also known as the quantitative section) may seem like a bunch of simple computations, but its much more difficult than that. The clock is constantly, constantly ticking and the questions are written to confuse you. But, if you have the right SSAT prep strategy and the right SSAT tutor to guide you through the test, youll improve your SSAT Math Scores dramatically. SSAT Math Practice tests/SSAT Tutor: Taking practice tests and reviewing them with your SSAT tutor is best way to improve your score. Practice tests alone can only help you so much, as they just show you where you struggle and give brief explanations to questions. If youre serious about improving your SSAT Math Scores, youll need to do a lot more than just find out where you struggle. A professional SSAT tutor can show you how to improve on the questions that are most difficult for you. Thats the only way to learn the information and answers questions correctly on the test. Can I use a calculator? No. Avoid using a calculator on your math homework or on your SSAT practice tests. Your brain needs to get used to doing simple math without a calculator. But, you will be allowed to use scratch paper and doing so is highly recommended. You can avoid making silly, mental mistakes by writing out every step of your work. How long is the SSAT Math section? There are two separate tests, and you have to answer 25 questions in 30 minutes for each SSAT math test, leaving you just over a minute for each question. There is a quarter of a point penalty for getting an incorrect answer on the SSAT; so do not blindly guess. But, if , and only if, you can narrow the question down to three answer choices, then guess. If you find yourself taking more than a minute on a question, make an educated guess and move on. SSAT Math questions: For the most part, the SSAT Math tests your arithmetic, elementary algebra and geometry skills. But, youll need to know a lot more than just formulas and equations. Youll need to manipulate theories and formulas to solve word problems and real-world application problems thats why simply memorizing them is not enough. SSAT Math sequence questions: Sequences are basically just patterns with simplest being {1,2,3,4}. Or sequences can be alternating numbers {0,1,0,1,0,1} . For these questions, try to subtract or add numbers to find patterns. In this sequence {5,10,15,20 } each number is 5 more than the previous. Or, focus on odd/even numbers, prime numbers, exponents and multiplication to answer more difficult questions. Consider this question: In the following sequence {3, 5, 7, 9, 21, 23, 25 ...} what is the next number? First, look to see what the numbers have in common (theyre all odd), and look for something that seems a bit off, like how 10-20 is completely skipped. Thats how youll find the pattern is odd numbers that dont begin with a 1. The next number will be 27. SSAT Math percent questions: Percents are huge on the SSAT. But, this one simple equation: (Part x 100) / Total can help you answer just about every question. Consider this question:If Kyle got 12 out of 80 test questions wrong, what is the percent of questions he got wrong?Just multiply 12 x 100 = 1,200 . Then, divide that by 80 = 15 (15% is your answer). There will also be questions like: Whats 10% of 43?To answer these, move the decimal point over two places to the left. So 10.0 becomes 0.1. Then, multiply the decimal percentage by the number (0.1 x 43 = 4.3). You will probably even see questions like: 7 is what percent of 3?Just turn these into an algebraic equation (7 = n x 3). Then, just solve (n = 7/3 = 2.33). Then, turn 2.33 into a percent by sliding the decimal over two places to the left (2.33 become 223%). SSAT Math odd and evens questions:All you need to know with these is that even/odd numbers are always two apart in a series. Look at this set: (1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8). The odd numbers are 1,3,5,7 (two apart). The even numbers are 2,4,6,8 (also two apart). Consider the following question: If X is an odd integer, what are the next two consecutive odd integers? A) Y and Z B) X and X+1 C) X+1 and X+2 D) X+2 and X+4 E) X+1 and X+3 D is the correct answer because odd/even integers are always two apart in a set. SSAT Math ratios and proportions questions: Just remember this: a proportion is two equal ratios. A/B = C/D or 3/5 = 21/35 (multiplying each by 7). Remember, 3/5 is a ratio and the whole equation is a proportion. On the SSAT, youll be asked to manipulate these equations, but remember they will always be equal. Consider this question: Solve for N: 5/10 = 15/N. First you have to find the relation between 5 and 15 (5 x 3 = 15). Now, just remember the two ratios must be equal. So, if you multiply 5 by 3 to get 15you must multiply 10 x 3 (which equals 30). So, N = 30. These are just a sampling of questions youll see on the SSAT Math section. Contact Varsity Tutors today to learn more about SSAT Math and find the best tutor to help you.

The Ultimate Study Plan for AP Courses

The Ultimate Study Plan for AP Courses Even though the start of the school year is just around the corner or already here, depending on your districts schedule you can still set yourself up for success. The first week of school is often a bit slower than normal, which gives you a great opportunity to get ahead on your upcoming AP courses. Here are a few guidelines to create the ultimate study plan. 1. Know the course content Familiarize yourself with the course content, including important concepts and skills youll learn throughout the semester, and the order in which youll learn them. Doing so can help you get a sense of what youll be asked to do, and knowing the order may help you predict the connections between different concepts, such as how one builds upon the next. If classes havent already started, contact your teacher to request an advance copy of the course syllabus, if possible. 2. Preview the textbook or use a supplementary text An excellent way to familiarize yourself with course content is to preview the textbook youll use in class. If you can get your hands on it, read the first few chapters so youll be able to jump right in when the semester begins. Skim the other chapters read the titles and subheadings so youll know whats ahead of you and how concepts and ideas relate to each other. This kind of reading can provide you with a bigger picture of the course. Jotting down unfamiliar vocabulary can also put you a step ahead in terms of course prep. 3. Read and quiz ahead Many coursesassign readings and pre-quizzes over the summer as well. Skim the material you already worked on this summer to make sure it is fresh in your mind. You can take different approaches to your AP reading: skimming, then reading them more in-depth; annotating them; and taking notes. Pre-quizzes are great for letting you know how youre likely to be assessed on material throughout the course. 4. Make study materials During the remainder of summer and the first week of school, consider making study materials such as flashcards, outlines, or PowerPoint slideshows that you can use when the class picks up speed. Youll be busy during the semester, and this slow time may be great for completing tasks such as writing definitions on notecards, which can prove extremely useful when quizzes or tests come around. Alternatively, there are apps you can download designed specifically for AP courses. Once youve made a study plan for your AP course, reach out to classmates and friends. If theres interest in study groups or partners, you might be able to meet up and discuss readings or quizzes. In addition, consider seeking out friends whove already taken the course and who can share their experience.

Should I Go to The University of Oklahoma

Should I Go to The University of Oklahoma The tutors behind Varsity Tutors are not just here to teachtheyre sharing their college experiences as well. Jeff graduated from The University of Oklahoma in 2013 with a bachelors degree in petroleum engineering. He specializes in GMAT tutoring, math tutoring, and science tutoring, among other areas. Check out what he had to say about being a student at The University of Oklahoma: Describe the campus setting and transportation options. Jeff: The University of Oklahoma campus is in the heart of Norman, Oklahoma, just outside of Oklahoma City. The campus is densely packed with beautiful buildings, foliage, and art. It is easy to get almost everywhere on campus by walking or biking. If you have to commute to campus, there are parking and shuttles available as well. How available are the professors, academic advisers, and teaching assistants at The University of Oklahoma? Jeff: It depends on the subject. The freshman-level courses are large, and it can be difficult to have a good relationship with your professor. However, the higher-level courses that are more specific to ones major are much smaller and the professors of these courses are generally more available for each student. How would you describe the dorm liferooms, dining options, location, socialization opportunities with other students? Jeff: There are several great dorms at OU that all have dining facilities located within them. There are cafeterias and fast food restaurants within the student union as well, including Canes, Wendys, Chick-fil-a, and Quiznos. Which majors/programs are best represented and supported? Jeff: I studied Petroleum Engineering because Petroleum Engineers were in high demand after I graduated from high school. Petroleum Engineering is one of the best degrees that OU offers. OU also has excellent engineering, business, and meteorology programs. OU supported Petroleum Engineering quite a bit while I was a student there. How easy or difficult was it for you to meet people and make friends as a freshman? Does Greek life play a significant role in the campus social life? Jeff: I would say Greek life is fairly big at OU and one of the best ways to meet other people, but there are plenty of other social groups on campus. I pledged a fraternity my sophomore year after having a pretty boring freshman experience; you dont have to go Greek to meet other people or find things to do at OU, but it certainly helps. How helpful is the Career Centerand other student support services? Jeff: Hundreds of excellent companies recruit through the Career Center at OU. The Career Center offers a lot of support for students looking for internships and full-time employment, and all of my employment offers came through the Career Center. How are the various study areas such aslibraries, the student union, and dorm lounges at The University of Oklahoma? Jeff: The Bizzell Library can be a bit crowded, but is usually a great study location. There are several smaller libraries located on campus that are also excellent study locations. My personal preference was the library at the Sarkeys energy center. Describe the surrounding town. Jeff: Norman, Oklahoma, is the epitome of a college town. The whole city revolves around the university and the campus. There are several great restaurants in the city with most of them located at Campus Corner, just across the street from the campus. Norman is also a short commute from Oklahoma City. How big or small is the student body? Were you generally pleased or displeased with the typical class sizes? Jeff: The student body at OU is quite large. The class sizes can be overwhelming at times for freshmen, but the class sizes generally shrink as the classes get more and more specific to ones major. Describe one memorable experience with a professor and/or class. Perhaps one you loved the most or one youregretthe most. Jeff: Id say that the best classes I had at OU were the ones where I was challenged to lead and to think outside of the box rather than just memorize information. The same can be said for the best professors I had at OU. My best experience at OU was my involvement with the Center for the Creation of Economic Wealth (or CCEW). CCEW is an economic development organization at the University of Oklahoma specializing in technology commercialization, software business development, social entrepreneurship, and agile product design. In my opinion, CCEW is the premier extracurricular organization at OU. Check out Jeffs tutoring profile. The views expressed in this article do not necessarily represent the views of Varsity Tutors.
